The spread of fascism in Europe crystalised in the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in July 1936. To fight its rise became a burning issue, and over two thousand British volunteers-mostly from working class backgrounds-travelled to Spain to fight for the Republican cause in the International Brigades. Walter Gregory's first-hand account of his experiences is a remarkable story of survival. Brought up in the Depression years, he had lived without hope of work, had walked to London on the Hunger March of 1934, and fought the Blackshirts in the streets of Nottingham. Still in his early twenties, in December 1936, he made his way secretly to Spain. Almost immediately he was plunged into front-line fighting. At first employed as a messenger, or Enlace, and later promoted to lieutenant, he fought in most of the major battles of the war: Jarama, Brunete, and on the Aragon front - Mediana, Purburell Hill and Fuentes de Ebro. Casualties were appalling; equipment, food, water and sleep scarce; trenches crumbled as soon as dug. By 1938 the Republicans were nearing defeat. Walter Gregory took part in their daring crossing of the Ebro and though wounded for a third time, went on to fight in the battle of Gandesa, before being captured on the British Battalion's last day of action. Imprisoned and sentenced to death, he was finally released over the French border. His compelling story has been edited by David Morris and Anthony Peters, both lecturers at Sheffield City Polytechnic. Contents: Foreword by Jack Jones CH; Preface; Acknowledgements; 1.
